Westward is committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all our pupils so they can learn and develop into self assured, confident, happy and positive young people in a relaxed and secure atmosphere.


Following the School’s ISI integrated inspection in 2015, inspectors commented, “The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils is excellent. Pupils are emotionally mature for their ages and are sensitive to the needs of others.”


The contribution and arrangements for pastoral care were also rated as excellent. The inspectors went on to say "Dedicated members of staff are highly effective in fulfilling the School's aim to educate children who will fulfil their potential, be happy and motivated and be well prepared for the move to senior school. Throughout the School, relationships between staff and pupils and among pupils themselves, are excellent."


Within Westward we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with other faiths and beliefs.


Children at Westward are expected to foster good manners, honesty and consideration for others.


All pupils from Nursery upwards have the opportunity to be elected onto the School Council. A democratic voting process takes place twice a year where the members are voted for by the pupils. The elected members from each class ensure that everyone within the School has a voice that is listened to. Pupils and teachers work together on suggested projects of their choice following discussion of topics at regular School Council meetings with the Headmistress.


We also have a buddy, prefect and young leaders system in place which allows the older children in the School to act as role models and care for the younger ones, promoting friendships, building confidence and developing responsibility.

The prefect elections take place at the beginning of the Autumn Term after each candidate has delivered their candidate speech stating what they could offer to the post.


Posts of responsibility play a vital part in the running of the School and are considered very prestigious by the pupils.


Academic and non-academic achievements are recognised and celebrated within the School community.


Positive behaviour and reinforcement is emphasised at all times.  Pupils are rewarded with a variety of incentives including verbal or written praise, star of the week awards, certificates and stickers.


In the Upper School a house system is in place where children get the chance to work toward gaining house points for good work and achievements.  Weekly house points are totalled by the prefects and the House Cup presented in our School assembly.
