Match Report - U9 Football V Claremont
On an increasingly wet September Thursday, the Westward Year 4 football teams made their way to Claremont Fan Court school for their first competitive match for the school. The matches were played on front pitches, to the left of the drive, in view of the main house.
Mr Pettipher was on hand to run one side whilst Mr Evans took charge of another.
Mr Pettipher’s team got off to a great start, going one nil up in quick time to shock Claremont into action. The game was played in good spirit and with a competitive nature. Claremont scored late in the half to even the scoring at the midway point. In the second half, which was again, incredibly close, Claremont made a goal claim that could have done with goal line technology! Eventually, and very honestly though, Westward conceded that the ball had crossed the line and went behind 2-1 and, despite their best efforts to get back on level terms, that ended up being the final score. Player of the Match was Harry.
Mr Evans’s team played a very good Claremont side, who were well organised and contained several players that played regularly for clubs and representative sides. With that, and the fact that this was their first outing as a team for the school, taken into account, they gave a very good account of themselves and the school’s values: they worked together and supported each other, did not let their heads go down when it was tough and kept going right to the end. Dylan was very good indeed in goal, making a series of impressive saves and showing bravely to come out of goal to close down Claremont strikers, whilst Henry showed great skill in midfield and picked up the two goals which Westward scored.
All in all, it was a good experience for all the players involved and an honourable start to competitive sport at Westward. The boys should be very proud of their performance and the image that they presented of our school. Player of the Match was Dylan. We all look forward to developing our skills and teamwork in the matches that are to come!
