Westward is a small, one form entry, 3-11 mixed school with approximately 150 pupils. It benefits from a dedicated and experienced staff who are fully committed to the ethos of the school.
Westward enjoys a reputation for traditional standards and academic success. Our objective is to enable each child to develop their full potential, providing a solid foundation at junior level for progression towards their chosen senior schools.
Scholarships are won annually to many independent and state grammar schools. The curriculum is continually updated with subjects like investigational maths having been added recently. In 2010 handwriting technique was reviewed with the school adopting the Kingston Cursive style. Our reading too has leapt forward, as we now watch for our children to reach the ‘ready stage’ earlier in their development. A full review of the reading scheme is in hand.
A purposeful syllabus boosts both self esteem and presentation skills, which are so important in the 21st century. Preparation for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art examinations takes place in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 and the Senior Introductory English Speaking Board examinations in Year 5 and 6.
A building and maintenance programme has been ongoing for some years resulting in a new Year 1 classroom, updated Early Years facilities and external covered learning areas. The children will benefit from a new library at the start of the Autumn term. Modernised accommodation for Years 5 and 6 is planned for summer 2012.
Westward is noted for broadening the child’s interests by offering a wide range of extra-curricular activities including drama, art, chess, ballet, computers, choir and orchestra.
For the convenience of the working parent there are thriving breakfast and after school clubs, which are run by qualified Westward staff.
Through kindness and caring the children are encouraged to develop an awareness of the needs of others. Academic achievement goes hand in hand with the development of character and individuality. This was noted by Ofsted who rated our spiritual, moral, social & cultural development as outstanding.
Please visit on a Friday morning to gain a fuller picture of life at Westward, where you will experience this friendly family atmosphere.
